life in the lc
Ms. Nafranowicz,
I called regarding the Lawyers Club lease and the lady suggested that I contact you via email with my question.
The lease says, "If for any reason student disenrolls prior to the full term of the lease, the price of the fall term will be 65% of the entire lease price." Does this pertain to a student who disenrolls before he moves in (or before classes start)? The lady on the phone said that there is a cutoff date before costs start being assessed but she was unsure what that date was, and in what amounts. Your help on this matter is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
foxes
The clause you mention is intended to speak to persons who move into the Club and then may w/d from school for any reason (including illness, dropping out, graduating in Dec, etc.) If you don't enroll and let us know prior to August 1, we will reassign your lease w/no penalty. After Aug 1 we have a very very difficulty time finding someone to take over the lease. If you are, for example, on the waiting list for another school and would like us to pass you by during this round of lease offers, please don't sign the lease and just let us know. We can place you back on the waiting list and give you a few more weeks. After July 1 all bets are off and you must conform to the lease.

a grand don't come for free

foxes sends his thanks out to adverseeffect and gotham for letting him know that they were rolling in the big bucks from duke law. both received offers surpassing $20k over the three years, while foxes has been languishing in a big pile of nuttin' honey.
so today, i gave the duke people a call. once i dropped the a-bomb ("admitted student"), they became very helpful. turns out, in typical irresponsible foxes fashion, i didn't fill out the scholarship form. (i think i missed it because the form can't be submitted via lsac; and, i'm an idiot.)
is foxes.bluespot.org becoming excessively dull? yes, but as they say, the devil is in the details. ahahah ha aha hahah hoh hoh ooho ho hehe ehhehe...

michigan law groupies unite!
my source from inside the michigan law admissions office tells me that a contingent of prospective students will be staying at the executive residence, located at 710 east university, arriving sometime shortly after 3pm on the 17th, so to get autographs you're probably going to need to get there early, like 1ish. i know there's going to be a ton of people waiting around so i'm planning on camping out the night before to assure myself a good view and i'm going to make a sign that says, "foxes roxes!!" because foxes is my favorite admit. god, he's so sexy!! i think most blawggers basically try to fuck bitches who are smart and try to keep them around so they can learn shit. i'm like, so hot right now. that golden god! you can tell rolling stone magazine that my last words were... i'm on drugs!

eats, shoots & leaves: an eternal golden braid
after putting me on hold, chicago whistles a bar of muzak, then writes:
We invite you to supplement your application with a two to three page essay on one of the following topics: (1) Should the Supreme Court consider public opinion in deciding whether a state's prohibition of same-sex marriage violates the Constitution? (2) Who should sentence criminal offenders—judges, juries, or someone else? or (3) Reactions you have to a book that is a current or recent (fiction or nonfiction) best-seller.
earlier today, i began to pen the essay that will get me into chicago. of course, i decided that this was not to be a mere application essay. no, my reactions to eats, shoots & leaves are not mired in the petty bourgeois concerns of my peers. this will be an epic statement, i decided, of randian proportions. but grand ideas are not without humble beginnings, and so follows my modest introduction. as shakira would say, "my breasts are small and humble, so you don't confuse them with mountains."
When Kurt Gödel hit the scene in the 1930s, he completely revolutionized academia’s view on punctuation. His incompleteness theorem stood to be immortalized forever by that ingenious formulation: “This comma, cannot be proven.” Lynne Truss maintains Gödel’s legacy through her effervescent British bestseller, Eats, Shoots & Leaves. Inevitably, she concludes, one cannot prove the veracity of one’s own use of punctuation; however, Truss, in the tradition of Gödel, ultimately advocates punctuation as an instrument for clarifying meaning, tied to tradition but not entirely encumbered by it, forward-looking while not completely decadent.

we can talk but money talks so talk mo' bucks
at the dining table as a kid, my pops always told me to clean my plate. once, when i didn't, he pulled down my pants and spanked me right in front of my family and visiting dignitaries.
accordingly, i fancy that i've set some kind of corporate flyback reimbursement check record. the rap sheet includes: $300 from goldman sachs over two days, $300 from microsoft for a weekend getaway, and $100 from jpmorgan for a one-day romp in nyc. my theory is that those joints want employees that both work hard and play hard—that's why i gnaw on those steaks, nibble on that sushi, ride in those towncars... i'm just a kid from the gutter makin' his butter off these bloodsuckers.
i'm attempting to work my magic with the ut law financial aid office:
I write to thank you for the Tom C. Clark Fellows scholarship offer. I am very interested in attending The University of Texas School of Law.
I would like to attend Prospective Students Day, and I was wondering whether the Law School would be willing to subsidize my visit. I would like to see first-hand the atmosphere of the Law School that I've read so much about.
their reply?
Thank you for accepting your scholarship offer. As for Prospective Student Day concerns you should email them directly at admissions@mail.law.utexas.edu
who accepted what? oopsies.

i'm tired of rumors starting
apparently the michigan law student assigned to me took the lazy way out. instead of calling me, she just dropped me an email. i can't complain, however, with the thirty minute turn around time on her email. in response to my question about michigan law in relation to chicago and texas, she writes:
About Chicago and Texas, clearly I have a bias, but I have the following: Chicago - While Chicago has a great ranking and a great reputation, it is an extremely conservative school. Michigan is extremely liberal. So, depending on your personal political philosophy, that might matter to you. Location-wise, UChicago is in the crappiest (and one of the most dangerous) parts of Chicago, buts its in Chicago (where I'm from - an awesome city). Michigan is in the boon docks (lets be honest), but its a gorgeous little college town thats actually pretty cosmopolitan for a college town. The closest city is Detroit, and no one wants to hang out there. But, you are 45 minutes away from Canada's Windsor, which is a fun little town. Regarding collegiality, I would say Michigan beats Chicago, and any other "top ten" school, hands down. The people here are not psychotic competitive law students. Although this, again, is hearsay, I've heard horror stories about students undermining other students and sabotaging their success at Chicago. I think the best way to tell is go visit and talk to people on campus. Lastly, Chicago puts out more "academics" than Michigan. What I mean is, if you're planning to be a law professor, you might have a better shot at Chicago. On the other hand, I've talked to law firm recruiters in Chicago who say that they would hire a Michigan Law grad over a Chicago grad with higher grades based on the lack of ego and general social capabilities of Michigan grads (ie. not socially inept).
Texas - Don't know anything about the school, but I'll just say that its regional. So, if you're sure (and I mean absolutely sure, b/c there's no going back) that you want to stay in Texas after graduation, it might be a good idea considering the savings in cost. If you want to go somewhere else later, it would be difficult. I would think you'd need to be in the top 10 or 20% in your class to make a Texas J.D. portable to other big cities. Also, keep in mind the recruiting situation. Ask the Texas Law people to send you a list of the firms that came to Texas to recruit. While you're at it, do the same for Chicago and Michigan. The opportunities available through on campus recruiting should not be underestimated. That being said, Texas is probably a hell of a lot warmer than it is here right now.
i'm convinced that every school carries with it generations worth of unfriendly insinuations involving stolen library books, incessant backstabbing, and gladiatorial duels. if such rumors don't exist about your school, then guess what? you guys are starting them.
actually my undergraduate institution also maintains something of a cutthroat reputation, but i found the actual experience quite contrary to such back-fence babble. much to my relief, it turned out that i was the only one who was hiding library books and setting fire to professors' mailboxes. i took those suckers to school. yo shorty, what's really good?

shootin' some bball outside of the law school

anything stuck in my teeth?
playing for the famed (read: infamous) skaxeyli intramural basketball squad the past two years, i was among the tallest players. i've kicked this season off with a 1-1 start on team white chocolate where i am the shortest player, but already one win away from the total number of wins accumulated over a career with team skaxeyli. in tonight's action, i totalled 8 points, 4 rebounds, 1 steal, 1 assist, and 1 physical altercation in a 30 to 48 drubbing.
in an effort to recruit me for their law school basketball squad, the university of michigan law school has offered me an enticing $5k/yr, which is just enough to cover my annual expenses on contraceptives. michael phelps will have a hard time winning this gold medal. shazzam!

messages left floating in the breezy
i was deleting my old emails because my mailbox filled up (stanford—please resend acceptance) when i noticed the following email from my girl sophia at ut law.
Just in case you still have some lingering questions or would like to come and visit with us, we at SROC are always happy to answer any questions you have about UT, Austin, or Law School in general. We're also happy to schedule a tour of the school or arrange to have you sit in on a class when you come to visit. There's more or less always a SROCer here in the admissions office to pick up the phone (512-232-1200) or answer an e-mail. Please don't hesitate to get in touch, we can’t wait to hear from you!
actually, i did take sophia for her word and dropped her an email inquiring about the status of my application back when oot had been ignoring my overtures. contrary to her "howdy grab your partner's hand and do-si-do" persona, my message went unanswered.
whose cutting board did i stand on? i ain't no fake thug! sophia, it's been three months! oops, i see the coke in your nose!
speaking of new york, i'll be there this weekend hitting up old friends for paprika. bronc-combo may or may not be guest blogging on law school from the rock star perspective. in the case that he does, please cover the ears of nearby women and children. the realness may not be suitable for your next of kin. bk holla back!

it is true that few unscientific people have this particular type of religious experience
while trudging home through the snow, i got caught up in reverie—tall palm trees, girls wearing tank tops, a sunlit spanish veranda—in the dead of winter. apparently feynman came to a similar revelation while digging his car out of the snow, making his break for caltech soon thereafter. they should write a book about me called "genius". no, i'm not joking.
michigan sent me yet another mailing, seriously upping the ante. professor don herzog writes, "this place is fabulous." and then again—"this place is fabulous." his conclusion? "this place is fabulous." no disrespect dr. herzog, but does it snow in michigan? yeah ok.

law is math
usc law didn't bother with any written personalization of my admissions note, however they did include the following curious remark:
I have noted from your application that you have a particular interest in law, mathematics, and science. I believe that you will find USC Law School well suited for students with your interest.
but nowhere in the letter did they substantiate this claim. i'm honestly curious about what form this would take; a math professor of mine tried to tell me about group theory and the law but i didn't bite. actually i did, and chewed a bit, but i didn't swallow that shizzle. who do you think i am? that gully crunk was hella slapdash. booyah!
maybe it's just further evidence that law schools are far from immune to the politics of pandering so familiar to undergraduates. yet from what i've heard, the geometry of the usc female is definitely a top course offering. i'll be seriously boning up on my studies. okay i'll stop.

i missed a phone call today from an unlisted number. to my surprise, the voicemail was left by a female. oops! my heart stopped.
danielle from georgetown law wishes me congratulations! and, if i have any questions, i can contact her. unfortunately, her message was all too short. gee whiz, i miss her already.

a love song for the symbionese liberation army

my heart's set on yale.
yesterday, i stepped on a ketchup packet that was lying on my floor. red goo splattered all over my michigan law materials; i wiped it onto unused hamburger buns. i may have irrevocably changed the course of my life forever by picking up the residual mayonnaise and mustard packets, but i did it. in the immortal words of jean-paul sartre, "freedom is what you do with what's been done to you."
today, i accused my friend of being a slave for professing his undying love for the new mac mini—but really, it's me who's suffering from stockholm syndrome. after penn law deferred me, what'd i do?
Dear Penn Law Admissions,
I would like to express my continuing interest in Penn Law, a school perhaps unique in its celebration of diversity in its varied forms...

will the real slim shady please stand up?

there's a million of us just like me (michigan law)
michigan has been tops at wooing for sure. they've sent me something like 3 pieces of snail mail and two emails since my acceptance and i love feeling important. their only mistake? including two slim shadys in their latest viewbook. i don't think i'll be ordering the onion rings upon my visit to stately lawyer's club.

killin' ants with a sledgehammer

"oh well, time for law school"
while michigan did not reject me for misspelling "activities" (or in my world, "acitivities"), it is still unknown whether or not my resume snafu will rear its ugly "i" on my nyu decision.
on the other hand, foxes scours his correspondences from law schools for serious. from the conclusion of andy cornblatt's congratulatory email:
Having read your application, I am sure that you will have some wonderful
options and a very difficult choice to make about where you will go to law
school. While I obviously hope you will join us at Georgetown, if I can be of
any help as you make your decision, please let me know.

i too dream in color and in rhyme
duke understands me, a sensitive thug—i definitely need a hug. included with their acceptance packet is a micro fiber lens cloth. that's right, the kind you use to keep your corneas dry. it's extra soft for my delicate eyes. i ain't gonna lie: when i get rejected from harvard, i might just cry.
duke law says, "challenge. engage. lead." but i can't leave blogging alone, the game needs me.

days of being wild

who wants my milkshake? (northwestern law)
today i called northwestern law to find out how i can schedule an on-campus interview for february, because their website only allows for scheduling interviews up until the new year. to my surprise, their first tier of phone response was automated. i thought, this hal jawn is softbatch! where my dogs at?
after i pressed zero, a woman who identified herself as amanda picked up the phone. her voice was a bit pouty, a bit sexy even. then i remembered that northwestern was one of the few schools who attached a real person's name and email address to their confirmation of application receipt email. amanda nowakowski? was this meant to be?
an email and a phone call, well gee, that's basically second base! amanda, i love you long time! keep the stove warm, honey... i'm comin' to northwestern!!

em calls harvard out

don't front.
i was scouring over the letter harvard sent me (for no particular reason... okay! okay! drooool) when i noticed the following egregious error:
As Dean Elena Kagan has noted, HLS is a big city, not a small town - its scale generates vitality and adventure; its diversity promotes the best teaching and learning environment imaginable; its unmatched range of opportunities attracts talented and engaged students from across the nation and around the world.
no, i'm not talking about the paragraph-long sentence; the true culprit is far more sinister. yes, that's right—they use a hyphen instead of an em dash. here at foxes, we know our punctuation. harvard's carefully constructed facade is crumbling! i was playin' in the beginnin' but the mood's all changed!
